SMOKY MOUNTAIN SUMMIT: October, TBD, 2018.  Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

General Safety – Alcohol 2017-10-25T05:30:33-07:00

We love our riders!  For that reason, we want to keep everyone as safe as possible while we are on the road.  The riding events will be alcohol-free, but when we are done for the day there will be plenty of opportunities to let your hair down and have a good ol’ time…and a nice cold adult beverage!  Drinking and riding will not be tolerated.

Anyone caught drinking during a WMS riding event will be prohibited from further participation in the event and, if competing, will be disqualified.

General Safety – Exposure at Altitude 2017-10-25T05:31:15-07:00

The Rocky Mtn. Women’s Motorcycle Summit takes place at high elevations (6,000 to 10,000+ ft) and can see high temperatures during summer months.  Dehydration, sunburn and Altitude Sickness are serious risks but are preventable.  Riders are asked to carry water at all times, be diligent about keeping up water intake throughout the day and use sunscreen or other protective clothing to protect from sunburn.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness / Dehydration include:

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Insomnia

  • Increased thirst

  • Dry mouth

  • Tired or sleepy

  • Decreased urine output or urine is low volume and more yellowish than normal

  • Dry skin

  • Dizziness

  • Dry eyes.  Few or no tears

General Safety – Follow the rules of the road 2017-10-25T05:29:59-07:00

Dangerous, unlawful, or otherwise inappropriate riding behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.  Anyone found to be riding in an unlawful manner or in a way that jeopardizes the safety of other motorists will be prohibited from participating in WMS riding events.

General Safety – Gear 2017-10-25T05:32:05-07:00

It is strongly recommended that all riders wear appropriate motorcycle gear when riding.  This includes a helmet, motorcycle jacket, long pants, boots, gloves, and protective eyewear.  Helmets are not required by law in Colorado but are strongly recommended.

General Safety – Group Riding Guidelines 2017-10-25T06:26:28-07:00

Tips for riding in groups:

Arrive prepared with a full gas tank and after daily TCLOCK inspection has been performed

Designate lead and sweep riders

Keep the group a manageable size (up to 7 riders)

Ride Prepared: At least one rider in each group should carry a first-aid kit and full toolkit, and all
riders should carry a charged cell phone, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might
encounter.

Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals.                                                                                                                                                                              Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced
riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should be aware of each
rider’s skill level before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride.

Ride in a staggered formation:  The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space
cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to
react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least
one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern.
A single-file formation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road,
under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other
situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to
swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get
entangled.

Periodically check the riders following using your rear view mirrors. If you see a rider
falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure,
the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to
catch up.

If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned
procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.
For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation
warrants.

If a rider leaves during the ride, the rest of the group should re-form the staggered formation by
criss-crossing into the next vacant position. Although it would seem more efficient for the
column directly behind the missing rider to move up, we do not recommend it because passing
another rider within a lane can be risky.

GENERAL – Who should attend the Women’s Motorcycle Summit? 2017-10-25T05:34:11-07:00

The Summit is for All Women Who Ride.

  • The Woman Who Rides her own motorcycle

  • The Woman Who Rides next to or behind a partner. (Men are WELCOME!)

  • All rider skill levels

  • All bike types

  • All riding styles

  • Women with an interest in motorcycling

  • All Sponsors

Women learn more about riding, from sharing their stories, comparing notes, and from hands-on workshops and clinics than they do from other electronic means.  The Women’s Motorcycle Summit is the perfect place for women to meet, grow and ride with women who share the love of riding.

The Women’s Motorcycle Summit attendee is many things in her day-to-day life, but above all, she is a motorcycle rider.  She rides on two wheels or three.   She rides on road or off.  She is a novice or experienced rider, or anything in-between.  Men are also encouraged and welcome to attend the Summit with their partner.  Men purchase the same kind of ticket as their partner and may participate in all events.

Those attending the summit are helping others by participating in an effort much larger than themselves. In return, they experience a fun and powerfully inspiring weekend, make new friends, become a part of an extended family and have an amazing adventure.

GENERAL – Tell me about the Women’s Motorcycle Summit in a nutshell. What will we experience? 2017-09-13T23:52:46-07:00

We come to have fun, ride, learn and support each other as individuals and as women.  We ride for causes we believe in to lift up others.  All bikes and all types of riders are welcome.  Be prepared to have a great experience, establish friendships and make memories that will last for a lifetime.  Men are welcome to attend with their partners too!

This is a different type of experience than most motorcycle events and it encompasses more than just riding.

The Women’s Motorcycle Summits are meant for fun, learning, empowerment, and charitable giving.

Our events provide the exceptional riding opportunities in beautiful settings, but also offer empowering speakers, hands-on & classroom training to improve riding skills and techniques, parties, fashion shows, auctions, and fun competitions.

The spirit of camaraderie is strong and we aim to break down the barriers between different types of riding and riders with the thought that we are all in this together and should support each other and just have fun!

GENERAL – The History of the Women’s Motorcycle Summit. 2017-09-03T05:48:53-07:00

Originally named the Steel Horse Sisterhood Summit, the event began in 2014 as an event for women to meet, share their stories and be inspired through each other to become better riders, and women.

With the addition of America’s Moto Rally Challenge in 2016, inspired by the Adventure Rally, presented by Butler Maps and Cycle World Magazine., the event went through a face lift: geographically, artistically and spiritually.

Today the event continues to serve as an opportunity for women to meet and be inspired to grow their skills: spiritually, emotionally, physically, mechanically and charitably.

S.T.R.O.N.G. SCAVENGER HUNT – What do I need to know? 2017-10-25T16:59:35-07:00

THE BASICS…

  • 2 1/2 day event
  • Designed for riders of all skill levels,  this event is custom built for all Motorcycle enthusiasts.
  • We recommend machines of 650cc or more.
  • All riders will receive their Clue Book, Map and Swag Bag during registration of their event.
  • Cell phone coverage is not available at all Waypoints
  • By the close of this event, you will have learned or enhanced your riding and navigation skills–helping you to get more from yourself and your motorcycle.
  • And … you will have forged new friendships … and discovered even more, about you.

THE NITTY GRITTY…

  • This is not a speed event.
    • Excessive speed, unsafe passing, and dangerous riding of any sort can result in penalties up to and including disqualification.
    • Excessive speed will also likely result in failed navigation, offsetting any theoretical advantage.
  • You can ride as much, or as little as you want within the allotted time window.
    • The intent of the Bonus Values is to reward people who are willing to both put in some miles and use team strategy to accumulate the most points.
    • We feel the Scavenger Hunt award should go to a well-rounded team. However, it is an equally valid approach to choose a ride you like to do anyway, grab a bonus or two and lunch, and come back with a big smile!
  • Teams must stay together.
    • Bonus Points Values will not be awarded unless all riders (or all bikes) appear in the Waypoint photo.
    • If you have a team member who breaks down, mechanically or physically, as long as the breakdown can be verified, the team member can be excused from competition without penalty to the team and the team may “ride on.”
  • Multiple teams MAY NOT ride together. Each team must ride their own ride.
  • For teams needing assistance with reading maps, GPS Codes, or would like a little reassurance for any other reason, the Scavenger Hunt Committee will provide a riding companion.
  • Scoring will be done exclusively over Instagram, which requires an account and correct use of hashtags.
    • If a photo does not show the “Featured Photo Location” as described in the Book of Clues under the scoring section, no points will be awarded.
    • If a photo is not tagged correctly, the Bonus Points Value will not be awarded.
  • Each Waypoint is rated as a Green, Blue, Black Diamond or Double Black Diamond in terms of increasing difficulty.
    • Our Waypoints have been chosen take you to the most exciting locations in the Rockies.
    • Reaching the Summits does not come without upping your game.  Let’s Ride Ladies!
  • GPS points will be furnished for a select group of Waypoints that we feel you will need that little extra assistance.
    • Please pay close attention to the TERMINOLOGY and GOOGLE MAPS SECTION.
  • The schedule for each day must be closely observed.
    • All photos must be uploaded and tagged within 3 hours of the end of each day.
  • Because there are no determined routes, there is no sweep.
    • You need to be self-sufficient to return to base at the end of the day.
    • If you break down, we will send help. Please refer to the emergency page.

STRATEGY…What we recommend!

  • Register for the event, enjoy the Meet “N” Greet, put your heads together as a team, and strategize your routes.
  • Pull up the Google Map for the Million Dollar Highway and acclimate yourselves to where each Waypoint is in ADVANCE of your departure
    • What we do NOT Recommend: Register for the event, grab your maps and clue book, jump on your bikes and head out to the closest Waypoint.
    • GPS Points will not be furnished for every Waypoint. As mentioned earlier; GPS points will be furnished for a select group of Waypoints that we feel you will need that little extra assistance.
      • EXAMPLE: The Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Durango contains over a dozen Waypoints. Silverton, Colorado is located at the halfway point. Additional waypoints can be found there
S.T.R.O.N.G. SCAVENGER HUNT – Scoring System 2017-10-25T16:39:21-07:00

  • At REGISTRATION you will receive an email with a link to the Waypoints that are connected to GPS navigation. It is as simple as 1,2,3:
    1. Click on the link in your email from your SMARTPHONE.
    2. The link will take you to the location of the Waypoint
    3. Click on directions.
  • To collect The Bonus Value, your entire team must reach the designated Waypoint together. You will prove this by taking a photo of the Waypoint as directed with either all of your faces, or all of your bikes (or both, but no mixing and matching).
  • BONUS: Receive 3 extra points per waypoint for both; entire team with all bikes.
  • You will upload that photo to Instagram (see additional instructions on each Waypoint page located in this Clue Book) and #hashtag accordingly.  This will allow us to see what you are doing back at basecamp, and keep a close score of your team’s earned Bonus Values as you ride.
  • NOTE: If there is no cell service at the Waypoint, take the photo and wait to upload it later.  All photos must be uploaded by 9 pm MST at the end of each day Check in is 6 pm and they have to be uploaded within 3 hours.
  • Each Bonus Value has a point value. When we receive the photo, we verify the elements are there (team, feature) and presto, voila! you have points.  We will be keeping score while you are on the road, so the more you keep up with uploading while you are out, the less waiting around at the base camp.
  • Because this event is about riding all kinds of roads and terrain, we want to reward the riders who do exactly that. So, there is a 5 point Creative Bonus for getting sets of waypoints – any green, blue and any black. Sets are calculated daily, not over the course of the entire event.  You cannot get credit for the same Waypoint more than once per event.
  • Creativity counts!  Each team can be awarded several “Creative Bonuses.”  The value of the bonus earned will be set at the discretion of the judges.
  • All judges decisions are final. Please make it easy for the people scoring by taking clear photos and uploading with correct tags. Crucial element: Have fun!
  • Timing: You must respect the schedule of the day, and we don’t want you speeding to do it.  KSU no earlier than 6 am and you are required to report back to Base Camp by 6 pm each day.
  • BONUS POINTS:
    • The Bonus Value is the total points received after reaching each Waypoint, snapping the photo and posting it on Instagram.  Bonus Values will vary based on the difficulty ranking of the Waypoint and will be posted in the Book of Clues.
    • A Creative Bonus is an extra set of points received from the judges and applies to any team act involving the merging of skill and imagination into original creative ideas, especially in the production of laughter.
    • A REVER Bonus is an extra set of points received when the team rides an entire route and tracks the ride with the REVER App on their phone.
    • A BUTLER Bonus is tied to the number of miles ridden over the colored G1, G2 & G3 roads over the course of 4 days, beginning on Thursday, June 8th and ending on Friday evening, June 9th. This winner will be a solo winner. Requires REVER tracking which can be set on the entire route.
    • GPS POINTS USING GOOGLE MAPS
  • DEFINITIONS:
    • A team consists of two, three or four riders.
    • A teammate is that perfect person who will help pick up your bike when you drop it. (Just kidding)
    • Divisions are the level at which you will compete. Masters, Open, Trikes, Photography, and Couples.
    • THE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) is a worldwide navigation system of satellites and their ground stations Our interest in them lies mostly with use in searching out the amazing waypoints we have chosen for this year’s America’s Summit Challenge.
    • Waypoint is a fixed location on the map, that when reached, a team may score points. Some Waypoints will be furnished with specified longitude and latitude, which when entered into Google Maps or a GPS system, will lead the navigators to the desired location.
